There are about 8million tons of plastic waste dumped into the ocean annually. Besides starting plans to pick up waste from the ocean, one may recycle the waste to create new products such as sneakers.
In June 2015, adidas published a new pair of sneakers. Its surface is knitted by plastic ocean waste while the base of the shoes is printed from 3D printing by using plastic ocean waste as the material as well.
adidas made sustainable as their core value. They aims to reduce the impact to the Earth. Therefore they cooperate with environmental groups concerning sea pollution and universities to issue the world first sneakers that is made of plastic ocean waste. adidas said they met difficulties when finding the right proportion of materials to make the shoe base. They hope they can apply recycling and 3D printing in more designs.
