Organization: The Community Chest of Hong Kong
Introduction: With the population size of Hong Kong expanding dramatically during the early 1960’s, poverty, diseases, lack of education, family violence and other serious social issues plagued the local community. At that time, the social welfare system was far from well established. A group of enthusiastic and visionary volunteers recognized the need to open up a “collective channel” to raise funds for all social issues while allowing welfare agencies to concentrate on developing their services. The Chest was then born to obtain donations through community wide appeals and allocate funds raised prudently to member social welfare agencies.
