Abstract:
Professor Charles Kao Kuen is the recipient of the world renowned Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009 in recognition for his distinctive contribution to global communications. Respectfully known as the “Father of Fibre Optics”, Professor Kao’s groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication, turned optical fiber communication into reality, eventually heralding “the age of the Internet”.

Professor Kao is an Alzheimer patient. Mrs Gwen Kao, as his primary carer, understands the impact of Alzheimer on the individual and family, and support system required. Her experience in caring for Professor Kao in Hong Kong, particularly in the early days, showed there seemed to be no general awareness of this disease, not even a medical doctor in a senior position knew much about it in the Asian population. Thus, Professor Kao and his wife has started The Charles K. Kao Foundation for Alzheimer’s Disease Limited in 2010. The Foundation aims to raise the public awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, educating the general public on brain healthcare strategies, enhancing care and support to Alzheimer’s patients, their families and caregivers. The Foundation also aims to encourage and facilitate co-operation amongst the various organizations, such as universities, government departments and NGOs to enhance resource allocation and education, thereby further benefitting Alzheimer’s patients and their families and the support system.
