Gong Ji-chul, better known by his stage name Gong Yoo , is a South Korean actor and best known for his roles in television dramas in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2017) and the films Silenced (2011) and Train to Busan (2016).
Gong has been concerning social and child abuse issues. He initiated and pursued production of a theatrical adaptation of Gong Ji-young’s novel The Crucible. This movie was internationally released under the title Silenced which sparked public outrage. This led to a reopening of the investigations into the incidents on which the novel and film are based. Public demand for legislative reform reached the National Assembly, where a revised bill to target sex crimes against minors and the disabled, dubbed the Dogani Bill after the Korean title of the film, was successfully passed in late October 2011. In 2014 he took a trip to Cambodia as a special representative for UNICEF, working hands-on to help children in need.
After the release of Train to Busan (2016) & Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2017), Gong Yoo is putting his popularity to good use by donating profits from his official merchandise in support of a charity helping children with serious illness. He held a charity bazaar in May 2017 in Seoul . During his Asian tour, Gong Yoo visited Taiwan & Hong Kong for fans meeting and tt was reported that the event sold a special collection of post cards from the actor to support Make a Wish Foundation.
