BEYOND ARCHITECTURE – Students from HKU Faculty of Architecture Using Design to Make a Difference

“We serve with knowledge and build with passion. Through improving the learning environment of those who are in need, we improve the children’s future.” A group of students from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Architecture have engaged themselves in the project, Beyond Architecture: Nepal 2014, with their expertise from design to build and contribute to a lower secondary school in Nepal with a better environment.

The project organisers, Architectural Society, HKUSU and Beyond the Wall (www.beyondthewall.asia), a non-profit society recently founded by four alumni of the same Faculty, share the common value that the architectural profession can assume a more proactive role in serving the less privileged who are in need. Last September, 20 members from the societies came together, started with generating ideas which then followed by producing architectural models and drawings. After months of study and preparations, they finally realized their ideas with on-site delivery of construction works to improve the building condition of Shree Nabin Lower Secondary School in Bhaktapur, Nepal through a service trip in January 2014.

“Education is an investment in a generation and holds the key to a society’s progression in the future”, said co-founder of Beyond the Wall.
