Probably another good news to share about social equality in Asia! The world’s first community activity centre designed for the disabled in Singapore, namely Enabling Village is pursuing “Something for Everyone, Everyone for Something” model for users with specials needs at any ages.
Initiated by by the Ministry of Social and Family Development and SG Enable Ltd, the Enabling Village are home to several social businesses that balance commercial success with the social imperative of inclusivity. Since its launch in 2015, Enabling Village hast hired staffed by both able-bodied and disabled individuals, they demonstrate that people with disabilities can make lively, vital contributions to society in different ways.
With the aim to make the Enabling Village a place where people with different abilities can move independently; where they can feel accepted for who they are, and be valued for their contributions. Key features include Personalised disability services such as jobs & career development, transport concessions & subsidies for assistive technologies or care services; Universal Design is the design of products and environments so that they can be accessed and understood by users regardless of their age, size, ability or disability such as braille signs , hearing loops etc.
The Enabling Village was Platinum winner of the 2016 BCA Universal Design Mark Award and also the 2016 Design of the Year Award for its demonstration of heartland rejuvenation and community building, integrating education, work, training, retail and lifestyle, connecting people with disabilities and the wider society.
